In December 2022, First Hydro company were granted permission to demolish the existing Electric Mountain Visitor Centre. The electricity sub-station will remain, and the land will be re-instated as an area of grassland. The existing car park will be retained and new vehicle charging points installed as well as improvements to the lighting.

It is intended the grassland area will be made available for local community events, on an occasional basis, throughout the year. This use may also include the provision of marquees/pergolas and portable toilets. The temporary community uses, and the provision of moveable structures will be undertaken in line with the Town and Country Planning Order 1995.

The contract for the demolition and repurposing has been awarded to Jones Bros who will be supported by specialist demolition contractor Wye Valley Demolition.

From the end of June and into July, you will notice the site-setup works which will include replacement hoarding panels and portacabins being installed.

The programme of works is scheduled to be between18-22 weeks to completion.

For the safety of the public as well as the contractors, one side of the car park will be closed to the public whilst the works are being undertaken. The contractor welfare area and parking will have a traffic management plan for the construction traffic.

The electricity supply will be cut-off from the building to allow for the safety of operations. This will mean the external lighting and car park meter will also be disconnected until a re-connection can be established.

Safety will be of upmost importance throughout the project. Jones Bros were recently awarded Gold for the 15th consecutive year for their health & safety performance by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA). Due to achieving Gold status for 15 years, they were further given an Order of Distinction.

The Project Team for the demolition and repurposing of the Visitor Centre Building are familiar with the area and have previously worked with First Hydro. They have great local knowledge and are aware of the historic importance of the Electric Mountain Visitor Centre.

The Project Manager for the scheme, has 17 years of experience. He will supervise all the works, ensuring they are carried out to a high standard.

There will also be an Information ‘Drop In’ centre, within the car park area, open to the public. This centre will contain further details on the project and any key information.
