The task of scheduling First Hydro Company's power stations,
and managing the associated sales of power and ancillary services falls
to its trading team based at Bala House in Deeside, Flintshire.
It is here that day-to-day decisions about pricing and managing water storage levels are made, with wholesale trading activity being conducted across a range of timescales, either directly with other players in the electricity market, or via brokers and exchanges.
Because of the stations' high level of reliability and fast response capabilities, there is often great demand for First Hydro Company's services, both in these traded markets and subsequently in the real time balancing market operated by National Grid.
There is a dedicated team of traders, including a 24 x 7 operation, that monitors events in the energy markets and actively seeks opportunities to optimise value for the business. The trading team is backed up by impressive information systems and a high-calibre pool of analysts.
Also based at Bala House is a marketing team that manages some of the company's longer term commercial issues, together with the risk management, and trade settlement functions necessary for participation in the modern electricity market.
